Trend Report: 2016 Colours of The Year

According to Ireland's IMAGE Interiors & Living magazine, 2016 will see colours making a comeback: red, yellow and blue, in particular are mentioned in their pretty primaries feature. Their January/February edition features circus-inspired colourful patterns, and is full of exciting and striking ways to use colours all over your home, from strategically placed cool claret and burgundy to uplifting sweet sunflower shades and moody, romantic blues. The IMAGE team advise mixing shades of pink, red and terracotta for a distinctive look; adding mustardy and amber yellows to a sparse, grey base; and coastal, sea shades of blue for a soft, relaxed look this spring (like on the mag cover below). Their verdict on this year's colour trends: "Think fluid forms, dynamic designs, and concentrated colour." (Kate Phelan)  How very exciting!!!

The last edition of THE GLOSS Interiors (available to read here) featured an extraordinary and exuberant shade of blue on the cover, along with dark pinks and midcentury bright colours in their trend pages inside. The expert advice on playing with colour comes from the interior designer Roisin Lafferty of Kingston Lafferty Design: Interior Designers Dublin: "Experiment with paint: Working to get the right shade of paint for a room is worth the effort. Even subtle differences in tone matter." See how she uses colour in her home here.

House and Home, Ireland's best-selling magazine rounds up a dozen different ways and tips on how to use pastels, which will continue to be huge this year, also thanks for Pantone's Colours of The Year: Rose Quartz and Serenity. Intense, rich hues on a feature wall is just one of the ways to update your home in 2016.
Here is some inspiration from Dulux and their own colour of the year: Cherished Gold, a faded shade of turmeric yellow.

This year, embrace colour with eye-catching combinations of striking tones, contrasting blends of bright and dark hues, sleek geometric lines and patterns, layered textiles in luxuriant textures, and glowing accents and surfaces.

  • Lovely blog! I agree that it is a good time to be bold. I have 2 blue couches in my living room and at the beginning most people were shocked by my choice. Now that a modern silver and glass chandelier hangs above them changed the mood of the room completely. Everyone loves them. It’s the magic of colours. You pair them right , they change the mood. Please continue to share your lovely ideas!
