Interiors Inspiration: Fabulous Floors

If you ever have had to put in new floors or are in the process of choosing the perfect floor for your home, you may be baffled by the endless possibilities. Solid, laminate, engineered, repro? Quite the undertaking. We don't pretend to help make things easier, but here are a few a few things to consider.

COLOUR Choose a colour to complement your interior, but that is also suitable to the size of the space. The colour and texture of your floor has a big impact on the feeling of space you get in a room. Light colours and wide planks will give a room a brighter, larger feel, wheareas dark parquet or narrow floorboards will add a dramatic edge but also make the room appear smaller.

LIGHT Throughout the day, the lighting in your room changes. Test your floor sample colour by night, in artificial light, but also during the day in natural light and sun exposure for a true impression of what your new floors will look like.

STYLE Make sure your future floors match the broader style and feel you want to give your whole interior. Natural wood in lighter tones create a neutral canvas for your furniture and accessories, while reddish tones bring a sense of colonial-style luxury. Brown-tinted are the best choice for a farmhouse-style interior.

USAGE You want to choose floors that suit your lifestyle. If you have an open-plan kitchen/dining/living room, you will want a floor that is waterproof, wears well and is easy to maintain.

FLOW Tie in your rooms together by laying out the same type of floors for that seamless, unifying feeling and to create the illusion of a big, open interior space.

VERSATILITY Floors are expensive, but choosing the right ones can help save money in the long term. Wooden floorboards are a case in point. You can play around with different vanishes, stains and paints, without the need to replace the actual floors for quite a while.

For our roomset at the Colourtrend Interior Design Forum in the Spring Ideal Home Show 2017, we've partenered with Irish flooring company Grain & Groove, who are providing this beautiful whitewashed Scandinavian oak planks, that are the epitomy of pure Nordic, modern-rustic style we favour here at home-lust.com. Visit our roomset L11 for advice on floors and more, between 21-23 April 2017.
