Interiors Inspiration: Staycation Inspiration & How To Holiday At Home

Whether a staycation is the only option for you this year, or you just enjoy your home too much to be bothered to travel this summer, there are ways to bring that awesome holiday feel into your home without leaving your postcode.

Here are a few ideas to help give your home a holiday make-over without breaking a sweat - or the bank - and enjoy what's left of our Irish summer...

  • Bring a touch of tropical into your home by filling your house with lots of plants and fresh flowers. Visit a nursery or garden centre and buy in bulk.

  • Create your own home spa with essential oils, your favourite bath salts, and scented candles, and a few good magazines.

  • Roll up and put away your carpets and enjoy that that beach house feeling of walking barefoot on the naked floors.

  • Set up an indoor and an outdoor lounging area with lots of cushions and throws, candles and trays.

  • Reframe or re-arrange your wallart and family photographs; call family members and friends you haven't seen in a while.

  • Go out and pick flowers and spend time arranging them in vases throughout the house - that's free therapy right there.

  • Finally find time for compiling that groovy Spotify lounging playlist and dance yourself to the sandy beaches of the Carribean.

  • Try dining outside no matter the weather. Line your patio or garden with candles and lanterns and listen to the sounds of nature.

  • Take time to escape in a good book. Stock your nightstand and windowsills with all those books you've been meaning to read for ages.

  • Take it outside. Weather permitting, your garden, terrace, balcony or patio is your living room. Set up camp there during the weekend, have a picnic in the middle of the garden, and just enjoy.

  • Do try a simple DIY project. Even if you are the clumsiest person in the world, spray-painting an old frame or making a trellis for your roses will be hugely satisfying.

  • Plant a herb garden and cook from it throughout the summer. There's nothing like walking it out in the patio to pick your own basil, rosemary and oregano instead of dashing to a soulless supermarket.

  • Stock up your barcart and discover your inner mixologist with some elaborate morning smoothies and fruity cocktails on lazy sunny afternoons.

  • Sometimes the most cherished memories happen at home, just like in the old days when you spent summers at gran and grandad's. Make the best of it by inviting family and neighbours for a relaxing barbecue dinner party.

  • Celebrate the simple pleasures: making daisy chains, listening to children playing, doing nothing.

A staycation is all about enjoying daytrips and festivals close to home, pottering about the house, lounging in the garden, redecorating, repotting, all those things we now call "slow living". Or a "proper weekend". Enjoy!
