We all want to perk up our home coming into summer, but sometimes that’s hard when you have winter-like hang-ons of greys and muted tones running through your home. Here are five simple steps to add that summer feel to your table and home without giving up on your monochrome Scandi wares …

Introduce ColourAdd flashes of colour to your table to lighten and bring allure to its setting. By simply putting lots of lemons in an oversized bowl to the centre of the table, you not only inject vibrant sunshine, but you give your guest a feeling of abundance and joy. Enjoy their wonderful zesty aroma and add sprigs of bay leaves beneath them to make the yellow really pop.

Texture And Pattern | You may have leftover dressing pieces from the Christmas period (like gold table mats, ornate glasses, patterned plates), that you feel just don’t work for your summer look...but hold on to them. The darker wintery tones of greys and neutrals work well when you mix them with contrasting materials. Try to mix them with crisp, bright elements, such as a white linen tablecloth and servingware. This will refresh you whole table instantly. Layer a slate table mat with a bright patterned plate and colourful cutlery, and voila.

Use NatureExperiment with nature’s bountiful greens for a simple, affordable way to introduce summer onto your table. Come Sunday lunch, add some flowers or fresh rosemary sprigs from your garden or fern stems you might have picked on your morning walk to your place settings. Simply tie a ribbon or rustic string around a rolled napkin and slip a fresh cut flower or fern leaf underneath to freshen up your table and make a simple meal a family celebration. Try adding little sprigs of ferns or mint leaves to tea lights and watch your table come alive.

Bring The Outdoors In | You can create a lazy summer ambiance simply placing a few lanterns on the floor beside the table to maintain that feeling of al fresco dining, inside. Cluster lanterns by either side of the table, on the floor along the dining room wall or on a dining room sideboard.

Finishing TouchesTo keep that informal summer vibe, bring elements of comfort and relaxation to your table. Add a patterned cushion to every second chair and a woolen throw to every other. They don’t have to match. Their different colours, pattenrs and textures add to the overall laid back look of the season. After all, this is about you relaxing with friends, and enjoying the warm weather!
